Visibility is key to business collaboration. If you are in distribution of products, you would like to know the inventory position at each of the members in the distribution network or a sub-network (regional network) in order to plan your distribution and efficiently manage you inventory across the regions and avoid undesired inventory of products in the network. This assists you in assessing the movement of products in real-time and critical to your decision on manufacturing or procurement of the product (s)
If you are a manufacturer, you may desire to have a look into the inventory position of your supplier or manufacturing state of your supplier-manufacturer to ensure that there are no stoppages in your production due to delays in supply of inputs or you do not end up with overstocking the inputs to avoid the risk of stoppages. The visibility with suppliers is dependent on the permission by the respective suppliers and the extent of visibility they are comfortable with.
Visibility provides direct access to the own network thus reducing any time lag in data sharing or compilation. Information is available as and when required and key to strategic planning.
